The new General Data Protection Regulation came into force as part of the 2018 Data Protection Act. As a self-employed piano teacher I need to clarify what data I hold, what I do with it, for how long I hold your data and what your rights are with regards to the data that I hold.
To this end, I have created a GDPR Privacy Notice, which I need all students (or parents of students for those under 18) to agree to, in order that I can continue to provide you with the services that you have engaged me to provide, under our Agreement (see www.worthingpianolessons.com/the-agreement).

Your Personal Data
Worthing Piano Lessons will be what is known as the ‘Controller’ of the personal data you provide to us. The company registration with the ICO is ZA308908 and my registered business address is: 28 Pevensey Road, Worthing, BN11 5NS.
What is needed
Unless otherwise agreed with you, I will only collect basic personal data about you and, or your child. This information includes your name, your child's name (where relevant), mobile phone number, email address, and, for child students, your child’s date of birth. Where relevant, this data will also include exam or competition mark forms.
Why it is needed
I need to know basic personal data in order to provide you with the services you have engaged me to provide, and to assert my right to be recompensed in return for these services as per the agreement I have with you. Exam or competition mark forms are required to aid with personal CPD reflection and records. I will not collect any personal data from you that I do not need in order to provide and oversee the services I have agreed to provide you with.
What I do with it
All the personal data I hold about you will be processed by Worthing Piano Lessons in the UK. Under article 6 of the GDPR it is permitted for me to be able to contact you by phone, SMS or email in order to carry out the contract for me to provide lessons. The information may also be shared with the following third-party organisations:
Email campaign company - MailChimp
Examination boards - e.g. ABRSM/Trinity College London/London College of Music/Victoria College of Music
Festival entries - e.g. Worthing Music and Arts Festival
Competition entries - e.g. EPTA
Piano Maestro – sight-reading and rhythm training software
E-Music Maestro – aural training online software
I am also using Go Cardless – a direct debit payments provider. They store your personal data in accordance with GDPR. As you have entered your data with them in order to register as a customer, this is not covered by my privacy notice, but by theirs.
No other third parties will have access to your personal data unless there is a legal obligation for me to provide it. I will take all reasonable steps to ensure that your personal data is processed securely.
How long I will keep it
I will generally keep your personal data for a minimum of 6 years, for purposes of tax records and personal development, after which time it will be destroyed if it is no longer required for the lawful purpose(s) for which it was obtained. I would like to keep copies of exam mark forms ongoing for personal development. I can remove identifying data if required.
